Lyric Story

Something Like That
Tyler Anderson
Based on the song "Something like that" by Tim McGraw.

“Hey, are comin?!” My friend said as I was walking out the local gas station. It was Labor Day weekend, which is when the county fair was.
“I’ll meet you guys there, I have to get gas.”
“Alright.”
I walked over to my red 1997 Ford Explorer and filled it up with gas. I had already paid the guy at the counter for the gas, so I got in my car and started driving to the county fair. As I pulled up, I noticed that all the parking spaces had filled up and people started parking on the grass which is what I did. I knew I was going to have a tough time getting out but I wasn’t really worried about it.
I got out of my car and walked up to where the ticket booth was. There was no line so I quickly walked up to booth only to be cut off by some girl.
“Oh sorry,” she said looking at me. All I could do was stare back. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. She had wavy blonde hair that went down to her shoulders and had on a plain pink shirt. She seemed to be around 17 years old, my age, but I hadn’t seen her at school so she must not be from around here. “You can go in front of me if want.” She said due to my silence.
“Sorry. No it’s fine; you can go ahead of me. I guess I was too slow,” I said with a nervous smile.
She smiled back and walked up to the person in the booth. “One ticket please.” She handed over a ten dollar bill and walked through the gate.
As she walked off, I went over to the gate and got my ticket. I still saw the blonde haired girl walking off. I really wanted to talk to her more but didn’t know if I should. I stood there like a fool contemplating on what I should do. Eventually I forced myself to try to catch up with her. I saw her with two people who looked like they must’ve been her parents. Her parents walked away and she looked over in my direction. I quickly looked away and tried to make it seem like I wasn’t looking her way. Out of the corner of my eye I saw her walk towards me.
“Hey, it’s you again!” She said with that pretty smile of hers again.
“Yeah," I replied like a nervous idiot.
“Didn’t you come here with anybody?”
“Well yeah, my friends but I can’t find them.”
“Have you even looked? You just got here after I did.”
“Yep, that’s true. I guess I just felt like I should introduce myself to you. My name’s Tim.”
“Nice to meet you Tim, my name’s Carrie.” She said with a slight laugh.
“That’s a great name. Like Carrie Underwood, the singer.”
“I love her! After she won American Idol she became my favorite singer.”
“Is that so?” I said with a chuckle. “I don’t mean to change the subject or anything but I can’t help but notice that I haven’t seen you around here before. I mean this is a small town in Alabama. You get to know everyone here after awhile.”
“Yeah, I ‘m not from around here, I’m from Dallas. I’m staying with my aunt and uncle for a little bit because of some issues back home.”
“Oh that’s too bad.”
“It was, but not so much anymore.” She kept smiling, which damn near melted my heart.
I smiled back at her. “Well since you’re new around here, I’d love to show you around and introduce you to everyone.”
“I’d love that.”
It took a moment for my brain to process what had just happened in a matter of minutes. While at first I had shown her around and introduced her to everyone, eventually we started to play a couple of games and then just started hanging out. The sun was beginning to set and it was by far the most beautiful sunset I had ever seen.
Neither of us said anything as we walked down the side of the lake. Eventually, Carrie turned to me and started talking. “I’ve had a great time Tim. I thought I was going to hate it here but it turns out that it’s going to be great here.”
“Trust me, it was my pleasure.” And as I finished this sentence, she got within an inch of my face and gave me a kiss. I was completely lost in that moment.
As she pulled away I smiled and put my arm around her. We continued walking down the lake with an optimistic look towards what the rest of the year would be like.
I was right to be optimistic. That fall turned out to be one of the greatest times of my life. Of course things inevitably come to an end, no matter how wonderful and great they are. On January 1st, Carrie told me that her parents wanted her to move back to Dallas to be with them. Her flight back to Dallas was on February 1st, which only left us with a month together. We promised to stay in touch, which is a promise that I was determined to keep. It just wasn’t the same though. All the magic from the previous couple months was gone. Don’t get me wrong, I missed her more than anything, but the sound of her voice was nothing compared to the high I felt when I was with her.
5 YEARS LATER
“Yeah, I’ll be there in a couple hours.” I said as I was waiting in the terminal, waiting to board my plane to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. “Yeah, I gotta go.” As I hung up my phone, the airline person announced that they were now boarding all seats for my flight. I gathered my things and headed towards to my seat. I put my bag under my seat and grabbed my iPod. Just as I was about to put in my headphones I heard someone yell my name. “Tim!” I looked to the left and right of me and figured their must’ve been another Tim on the plane that someone was talking to, I mean I doubt I would know of anyone on the same flight as me. “Tim!” This time I stood up and looked behind me. As I scanned the rows behind me, I saw a blonde haired woman waving at me. As soon as I saw her it hit me. This was Carrie.
I walked to her seat which was about four rows behind mine, nervous about what I should say to her after almost five years. She was the first to talk, “I bet you don’t remember me,” she said that with her usual smile that made me fall for her.
I tried to think of something funny to say, “Only every other memory.”
“Really? Because I only thought about you every third memory.”
I smiled at her attempt to be humorous. I still couldn’t believe I was seeing her on this plane. “So you’re headed down to New Orleans?”
“Yep, same reason that I’m guessing you’re going down there for.” As she said this, one of the flight attendants told me I had to go to my seat.
“Alright, it was great seeing you Carrie.”
“Let’s talk after the flight.”
I went back to my seat and waited for us to takeoff. That whole flight, the only thing I could think about was what just happened. We did talk after the flight and even hung out a little bit. She had told me that she moved to Alabama for work and was only living half an hour away from where I lived. Apparently she had wanted to visit me, but always thought that I probably forgot about everything that we had done together.
That’s how the story of me and Carrie goes. Something like that.
